Este adesea descris ca \u201ecreierul\u201d calculatorului, deoarece coordoneaz\u0103 \u0219i controleaz\u0103 majoritatea opera\u021biunilor dintr-un sistem informatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Modul de func\u021bionare al unui procesor:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Procesorul urmeaz\u0103 un ciclu de operare cunoscut sub numele de <strong>ciclul ma\u0219inii<\/strong> sau <strong>ciclul instruc\u021biunii<\/strong>, care const\u0103 din urm\u0103toarele etape:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fetch (preluare)<\/strong>: Procesorul preia o instruc\u021biune din memoria principal\u0103 (RAM) \u0219i o aduce \u00een CPU.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Decode (decodare)<\/strong>: Instruc\u021biunea preluat\u0103 este decodificat\u0103 de unitatea de control pentru a \u00een\u021belege ce opera\u021biune trebuie efectuat\u0103.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Execute (execu\u021bie)<\/strong>: Instruc\u021biunea decodificat\u0103 este executat\u0103 de unitatea aritmetic\u0103 \u0219i logic\u0103 (ALU) sau de alte componente ale procesorului.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Write-back (scriere)<\/strong>: Rezultatele opera\u021biunii sunt scrise \u00een registre, cache sau memoria principal\u0103.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acest ciclu se repet\u0103 foarte rapid, miliarde de ori pe secund\u0103, \u00een func\u021bie de frecven\u021ba procesorului.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Un procesor modern poate avea mai multe nuclee, fiecare dintre ele fiind capabile s\u0103 execute instruc\u021biuni \u00een mod independent. Un procesor cu mai multe nuclee poate efectua mai multe sarcini simultan, cresc\u00e2nd astfel performan\u021ba general\u0103.
